Abstrakt
The study examines art objects mentioned in the wills and households of Prešov burghers between 1661 and 1822, using testamentary records as a source for the study of collecting and material culture. Focusing on jewellery, paintings, clocks, engravings, and collections of coins and medals, the study explores the relationship between wealth, artistic taste, and social status within the urban environment of early modern and nineteenth-century Prešov. By analysing the objects recorded in wills, the chapter highlights the role of luxury artefacts in shaping burgher identity and demonstrates the value of testamentary sources for reconstructing collecting practices beyond aristocratic circles. The study thus broadens our understanding of collecting culture and everyday artistic life among the urban elites of present-day Slovakia.
