Abstrakt
In this paper, we present the results of an exploratory case study on the acquisition of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures as a foreign language (SFL). This corpus-driven research is based on audio and video recordings of spontaneous oral interactions produced by a group of three pre-university learners of Spanish (A2+) in an immersion context. All participants are bilingual speakers of German (L1) and Turkish (HL).
This longitudinal study, conducted over five months and three stages, focuses on the interac-
tions of these learners during four outings to delocalized pluricultural spaces. In these settings, the students successfully communicated in Spanish with plurilingual speakers from diverse cultural backgrounds. The audio and video-recorded interactions were transcribed to iden-
tify the strategies employed by the SFL learners to overcome the challenges of spontaneous communication. Additionally, the learners recorded audio-journals after each outing, which helped them to reflect on their lack of knowledge about the language and to further develop their intercultural awareness, so as to draw an individual action plan for future outings.
The findings of this study suggest that feedback provided by the participant observer, the linguistic and cultural mediation offered by near-peer role model learners of Spanish, along with a differentiated assessment based on the scales for «Mediating communication» in the Common European Framework of Reference’s Companion Volume, contributed to the devel-
opment of the three learners’ intercultural communicative competence.
