Abstrakt
The study focuses on the current modification of the carving tradition in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, where local carvers began producing storyboards around the 1970s. These depict everyday scenes from the lives of the natives as well as mythological stories. Based on Hana Librová’s concept of the social value of landscape, the author identifies the absence of aesthetic depictions of landscape in East Sepik art and seeks to provide an explanation for the origins of storyboards and their form. He highlights the influence of Christianization and tourism on local culture, traditions and artistic production.
