Secondly, job candidates use loanwords to demonstrate his/her competence at an
international level. In such cases job candidate often replicates the borrowed neologism
with the corresponding Russian word.
Recruiter: — Where have you worked before?
Job candidate: — I have worked in the sphere of инвент (event) / that is I used to
organize events / press-centres / some conferences / presentations/ concerts / I used to work
in a PR-agency / that is / in essence / I dealt with different projects // (KR, episode 26).
Recruiter: — Hello / Yelizaveta / today we are discussing the vacancy of «deputy head
of the budget and strategic planning office» // The company is second in the Russian market
and is in top-10 leading companies in the world //
Job candidate: — And where are located / хедквотерс (headquarters) / the main
office? (KR, episode 33).
Recruiter: — Have you ever thought of running your own business? You have much
energy / You are a very charismatic person //
Job candidate: — It just so happened / no matter how funny it is / it is not related
with tourism / I would like a business connected with ticket offices / maybe / кетеринг
(catering) / maybe providing offsite food and beverage / theatre buffets // (KR, episode 39).
The use of terms-loanwords which meaning, according to a job candidate’s opinion,
may not be known to recruiters (that’s why their explanation in Russian is given during a
conversation), is logically explained by a current trend for the use of foreign words
historically being solid and prestigious for Russians. «The modern integration level justifies a
tendency to use international terms, prevalently of English origin» (Kostyeva 2004) that is
true in general for many business spheres of modern Russia.
Therefore, recruiters use terms and professional vocabulary in the process of
implementing tactics that test the job candidate's skills as a specialist in a specific field. Job
candidates use special vocabulary to demonstrate their professional competence.
Extralinguistic factors which influence on the discourse explain dominance of English
loanwords among the professional vocabulary (including barbarisms), not fully assimilated in
the Russian language.
